Floodplain Meadow of Three Rivers Michigan

is a private residence owned by Larry and Becky Hackenberg. The site consists of 2 1/2 acres on South Constantine Street of upper floodplain meadow, adjoining 3 acres of spring-fed open wetlands forming a tributary that slowly flows into the St. Joseph River, adjoining 2 1/2 acres of low woodland trees with sparse undergrowth next to the river.

The floodplain meadow previously planted to lawn is now being allowed to return to selectively pruned, self-seeded native plants interspersed with some cultivated plants. The basic planting philosophy is to observe what plants self-seed and then selectively prune adding a touch of cultivated plants here and there to produce attractive landscape designs (see photo and text below). Details of the evolving design will be shared at this site as they occur each growing season.

The earth mound directly behind the sign has been selectively pruned to encourage a handsome stand of self-seeded Horse Weed and cultivated forsythia on top with a delightful white fringe of self-seeded Pepper Grass and Asters around the base.
